~A BRIEF HISTORY~
The Gift of Reiki- CAET First Degree ManualŠ 1995-2006

In Japan, all forms of energy healing are referred to as Reiki. Usui Reiki is, therefore, a type of Reiki. The beginnings of this Japanese healing art still remain somewhat of a mystery. Reiki is priceless, regardless of where, when or how it began. Still, human nature leaves us curious.

Dr. Mikao Usui is credited with both the re-discovery and revival of this healing therapy. His experiences are not completely clear. To date, there is no written information which confirms either of the two known historical accounts.

The first account originates from the oral teachings of Mrs. Hawayo Takata who brought Reiki to the United States. Her teachings stated that Dr. Usui was a Christian minister and teacher at a University in Japan. Challenged by his students, he set out to find how Jesus healed. The other claims that Dr. Usui may have studied with Buddhist monks in a Zen monastery. It is believed he was following a quest to re-discover how Buddha healed. This story is taught by The International Center for Reiki Training.

Both accounts state that this quest eventually led him to the Indian Sutras of Tibet. There, he found a formula for connecting to a higher power, which gave him technical knowledge. It did not, however give Dr. Usui the understanding of it or the ability to heal. Determined to succeed, he committed to meditate, fast and follow directions of the sacred formula. Twenty one days later, Dr. Usui had a mystical experience which gave him the ability to perform Reiki, pass the ability on to others and the knowledge of the three symbols.

Dr. Usui was the founder and first President of the Usui Reiki Ryoho Gakkai. Usui lineage names Dr. Chujiro Hayashi as next in line. He is credited for opening the first Reiki clinic, the standard hand positions, the creation of the traditional three degrees, and the initiation procedures. Dr. Hayashi initiated Mrs. Hawayo Takata who brought Reiki to Hawaii making her the first American Reiki Master.

It is estimated that there are as many as one hundred thousand people practicing this healing art throughout the world today. Reiki Masters vary widely in their teachings and presentation of Reiki. There is no one individual or group who may claim that their way is the only way. You will have Reiki for the rest of your life so invest the time it takes to select your teacher wisely. Prepare a list of questions and interview several teachers. Choose the one your heart resonates with most.
